Aversa was Italy's first Norman county: in 1030 Rainulf Drengot received it in fief, and from this outpost the Normans set out to conquer the South. The cathedral with its octagonal dome and the old town of a hundred churches preserve that rank; Casa Cimarosa remembers the composer born here in 1749.
The other glory sits on the table and in the glass: buffalo mozzarella from the plain, and Asprinio, the white wine grown "married" to poplars on towering vine walls — a Etruscan inheritance unique in Europe. Naples and Caserta are twenty minutes away: Aversa stands between them, with a character of its own.
