Feast of Saint Euphemia
📅 Every year, from 1 to 16 September
Carinaro celebrates Saint Euphemia on 16 September, but the festivities already begin on 1 September: more than two weeks of religious rites, shows in the square and contests.
In 1497 Carinaro was the thirteenth casale of Aversa and counted nineteen hearths, that is nineteen families; by 1689 it had ninety-eight. On the twelfth of April 1929 the municipality was suppressed and annexed to Aversa without much ceremony, and its autonomy came back only in 1946.
The feast of Saint Euphemia, on 16 September, keeps a custom not seen elsewhere: the contest of the poles. It is a public auction, and whoever bids highest wins the right to carry the statue of the patron saint on their shoulders along the stretch between the square and the church. Together with the auction, the offerings in kind gathered during the procession are sold off as well.
