The Transfigured Christ, patron of the land of Agro Atellano
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of July
Succivo celebrates the Transfigured Christ on the first Sunday of July, in the church dedicated to him.
The name comes from the Latin subsecivus ager: leftover land, what remained from the centuriation and could not be assigned to anyone, and so lay uncultivated. From those leftovers a village grew, a suburb of ancient Atella, the town that gave its name to the fabulae atellanae, the farces through which half of Latin comedy passed. The museum of the Atellan countryside is here.
Five hundred metres from the centre stands Teverolaccio, a hamlet enclosed by walls with three gates: an Aragonese tower, the palace later built against it, the little church of San Sossio and the houses. The first document naming it dates from 1522. When the fascist regime created the municipality of Atella di Napoli, Succivo lost the hamlet of Casapuzzano, which never came back: today it belongs to Orta di Atella.
