Cesa

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 8,496 · Postal code: 81030

The name says a cut: silva caesa, the felled wood, or else an estate cut off from the main roads. And indeed in 1304 Charles II ordered the closing of the road that ran from outside Aversa as far as the village of Cesa, so that travellers would be forced to pass through the city and stop there to spend their money.

The first document naming the settlement is a diploma of the Lombard princes Pandulf and Landulf of Capua, from 964. Of the old monastery of Montevergine, founded by the logothete Bartolomeo di Capua, nothing survives: the monks moved to Aversa in the fourteenth century. In the surrounding fields the vines are still trained alberata-style, climbing up trees, and yield asprinio.

📅 Every year, in the week after 19 June, the anniversary of the relics' translation

Cesa celebrates Saint Cesarius of Terracina in the week following 19 June, the anniversary of the translation of his relics. On Saturday and Sunday the saint's statue is carried on shoulders in procession through the town's streets, decorated with lights; the celebrations close with the Flight of the Angels ritual.
