Vitulazio

Province: Caserta · Region: Campania · Population: 7,020 · Postal code: 81041

Until 1882 the village was called Vitulaccio, and that ending must have weighed: by a royal decree of Umberto the First, from the first of January 1883, it became Vitulazio. The name comes from the same place all the same, from calves — vitulus — and on the coat of arms two calves still stand rampant against each other, holding up a pine tree with their legs.

Autonomy had arrived in 1806, when a decree of Joseph Bonaparte detached it from the casali of Capua, among which Vitulazio was already counted in the tenth century. Under Fascism it was lost again: Vitulazio and neighbouring Bellona were joined into a single municipality, named Villa Volturno. Today the village sits at the crossing of the Appian Way, the Casilina and the motorway of the Sun.
