In the hamlet of Testaccio, instead, Saint George the Martyr is celebrated on 23 April: the Saturday before the solemn feast, his image is carried to the Maronti beach for the blessing of the beach and the sea, a custom dating back to Saracen times, when the saint was invoked to protect the population.
