On 14 May Capri celebrates Saint Constantius, its patron, in the church that carries his name — and it does so before the island enters the summer.
Tiberius ruled the empire from here for a decade: Villa Jovis, on the cliff's edge, is the first of an endless list of reasons why Capri is Capri. The Faraglioni stacks planted in the blue, the Piazzetta — the "world's drawing room" — with its theatre of café tables, Via Krupp switchbacking down sculpted bends to Marina Piccola, the Gardens of Augustus.
The modern myth was built by writers, exiles and dolce-vita stars; boutiques and lemons do the rest. The secret is timing: stay after the last tour boats sail, when the evening returns the island to the Capresi.
