"Torna a Surriento", written in 1902, turned this belvedere over the Gulf of Naples into worldwide nostalgia before most people had seen it. Sorrento sits on a sheer tuff terrace: below, the two fishing harbours of Marina Grande and Marina Piccola; around it, the lemon groves behind limoncello and a centuries-old tradition of inlaid woodwork.
Position is its ace: Capri twenty minutes away by hydrofoil, Pompeii half an hour on the Circumvesuviana railway, the Amalfi Coast just beyond the headland. But give it an evening of its own, after the coaches leave, when the centre smells of orange blossom.
