Feast of Santa Maria del Lauro
📅 Every year, on 12 September
On 12 September Meta celebrates Santa Maria del Lauro, whose statue tradition holds was found in the 8th century; Holy Week brings another cherished custom, that of the two processions.
The name speaks of a boundary: at Meta the Sorrento peninsula came to an end, and where the basilica now stands there was the milestone that closed it. Local legend tells that there, beside a laurel bush, a peasant woman found a golden statue of the Madonna, with a hen and twelve chicks at its feet; the bishop had it carried to Sorrento, but the next day the statue was back at its bush.
Meta has always looked to the sea: in the ninth century its merchants reached the ports of Palestine, and around 1650 the Alimuri shipyard was founded. Independent from 1819, in 1927 the fascist regime dissolved it into Greater Sorrento together with Piano and Sant'Agnello; it became a municipality again in 1946.
