Sant'Agnello

Province: Naples · Region: Campania · Population: 9,029 · Postal code: 80065

The coat of arms of Sant'Agnello carries five towers, one for each of its five quarters, and the motto Post nubila Phoebus: after the clouds, the sun. The clouds were its dependence on Piano di Sorrento, from which the hamlets had been demanding separation for decades; the sun was the decree of 10 December 1865 that brought the municipality into being the following year.

It did not last long: from 1927 to 1946 the fascist regime dissolved Sant'Agnello into Greater Sorrento, together with Sorrento, Piano and Meta, and independence returned only with the fall of the regime. On the cliff above the sea stands Villa Crawford, home of the American novelist Francis Marion Crawford: on the bastions that hold it up he had In tempestate securitas carved.
