Pimonte

Province: Naples · Region: Campania · Population: 6,000 · Postal code: 80050

The name comes from the Latin apud montes, by the mountains, and the coat of arms repeats it plainly: three green mountains, and on the middle one a capital P in gold.

For centuries Pimonte was not traded on its own: it was part of a package of lands, with Lettere, Gragnano, Le Franche and Positano, that the kings passed from one feudal lord to the next all together. In 1292 they went to Manfredo Maletta, count of Mineo; in 1436 Alfonso of Aragon actually pledged them as security to Raimondo Del Balzo Orsini, to borrow the money for his war; in 1448 he made a gift of them to Giovanni Miroballo of Naples, whose family held them until a viceroy confiscated them for treason. The village lies on the road from the Stabiae countryside to the Amalfi coast.
