Gragnano is the city of pasta, and not as a figure of speech: the "Pasta di Gragnano" IGP protects a five-century tradition born of a perfect microclimate — the humid wind off the Lattari mountains that slowly dried the macaroni hung out along the streets. The pasta works, many still family-run, welcome visitors; bronze-die extrusion here is religion.
The Valley of the Mills, a green gorge behind the centre, keeps the ruins of the watermills that ground the wheat. Between tastings, Castellammare and the Sorrento peninsula are ten minutes away.
