Saint Anthony the Abbot, patron of the Path of the Gods
📅 Every year, on 17 January
Agerola celebrates Saint Anthony the Abbot on 17 January.
The Lattari mountains owe their name to milk, and it was doctors who made it famous: Galen, physician to Marcus Aurelius, praised its healing properties, and in the sixth century Cassiodorus records that the king of the Goths, finding his doctors of no use, was sent to the remedia lactarii montis. Agerola sits up there, in a hollow six hundred metres up, and for centuries belonged to the duchy of Amalfi.
It was one man who detached it from Amalfi: general Paolo Avitabile, who had made his fortune serving first the Bourbons and then the maharaja of Lahore, and in 1844 obtained the village's transfer from the province of Salerno to that of Naples. Only the church kept it tied to Amalfi. At Campora, meanwhile, stands a lime tree: planted for the Republic of 1799 and replanted ever since.
