"It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there," John Steinbeck wrote in 1953 — and Positano has never stopped feeling unreal since. The vertical village of the UNESCO-listed Amalfi Coast cascades in pastel houses down to the Spiaggia Grande, pinned together by the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta.
Italian resort-wear was born here in the 1950s, and the sandals are still made by hand. One honest warning: in July and August you walk in single file. May, June and September are another life entirely.
