Pliny the Elder died here, observing too closely the eruption of 79 AD that also buried Stabiae: the frescoed, panoramic villas of Arianna and San Marco can be visited today almost alone. Castellammare is a city of waters — twenty-eight different mineral springs at its spa — and of ships: its yards, active since 1783, launched in 1931 the Amerigo Vespucci, the world's most beautiful training ship.
A cable car climbs in eight minutes to Monte Faito, a thousand metres above the gulf: Campania's fastest balcony. Below, the seafront and its bakeries defend the ritual "biscotto di Castellammare".
