On the Sarno river, at the border between the provinces of Salerno and Naples, Scafati grew on water and tomatoes: this is the heart of the agro nocerino-sarnese, homeland of the San Marzano DOP that taught the world what passata should be. The Bourbon Royal Powder Works, founded in 1852 with its riverside gardens, is the symbol monument, now a cultural venue.
Pompeii is literally next door: the excavations are five minutes away, and sleeping in Scafati is the practical move of savvy travellers. Devotion to the Madonna dei Bagni and a cuisine of preserves complete the portrait.
