They call it the «city of coral», and it has been so for three centuries: the master engravers of Torre del Greco work coral and cameos for shop windows across half the world, and a state school still passes the craft on. The other partner in its history is Vesuvius, which has destroyed it several times — above all in 1794 — and each time has watched it grow back on its own slopes: «daughter of Vesuvius», they say here.
The name has divided people for centuries. One explanation traces it to a tower built by Frederick II, the eighth counting from Naples; the other to the Greek wine once produced here in quantity. The place name first appears in a charter of 1324. At Torre del Greco Giacomo Leopardi spent his last stays and composed «La ginestra», looking at the flowering slopes of the volcano from the Villa delle Ginestre, which can be visited today. Herculaneum and its excavations are ten minutes away.
