Here the eruption of 79 AD did not bury: it sealed. The volcanic mud that covered Herculaneum preserved wood, papyri, even food, and the excavations — UNESCO-listed with Pompeii — reveal two-storey houses with original beams: smaller and more intact, they are visited at a different pace. The Villa of the Papyri yielded the only ancient library to survive.
Above the ancient city lives the Bourbon one of the Golden Mile, lined with eighteenth-century villas; the road to Vesuvius's crater starts here. The Resina market, a kingdom of vintage clothing, is a popular institution.
