Torre Annunziata

Province: Naples · Region: Campania · Population: 43,521 · Postal code: 80058

Beneath Torre Annunziata sleeps a palace: Poppaea's villa at Oplontis, UNESCO-listed with Pompeii, keeps some of the finest second-style frescoes ever found — and you often visit them nearly alone, steps from the Pompeian crowds. The modern town is a child of the "white art": historic pasta works, Voiello first (founded here in 1879), earned it the title of pasta city.

The seafront watches the gulf between Vesuvius and the Sorrento peninsula; black volcanic-sand beaches recall who commands this landscape. A dense, genuine stop off the polished routes.
