Trecase

Province: Naples · Region: Campania · Population: 9,118 · Postal code: 80040

The name is a fiscal leftover: in 1337 Robert of Anjou, urged on by his wife Sancia of Majorca, handed the Silva Mala of Vesuvius to three Neapolitan convents, and the peasants sent to clear it ended up paying their dues to the three religious houses. From those three houses comes Trecase. Before that the wood had been a hunting reserve of Frederick II.

The volcano has remade the village more than once: the eruption of 1631 destroyed it entirely and it was rebuilt on the same spot; on 23 December 1760 a lava flow cut its road to Torre del Greco. As a municipality, though, it is very young: a hamlet of Boscotrecase from 1808, it won autonomy only on 5 April 1980, after a committee formed in 1967 and a referendum.

Feast of Saint Januarius

📅 Every year, on 19 September

On 19 September Trecase celebrates Saint Januarius, long invoked for protection from Vesuvius eruptions; when the procession returns, the "Incendio del Campanile" is held, a fireworks display simulating the bell tower catching fire.
