Agropoli

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 20,610 · Postal code: 84043

The name says it all: Akropolis, the high city, as the Byzantines christened it in the sixth century. Agropoli's old quarter still sits up there on its promontory above the Tyrrhenian: climb the stepped lane, pass the seventeenth-century gate and reach the Angevin-Aragonese castle, with views running from Capri to the Cilento mountains.

Below, the modern town of 20,610 lives off its harbour and beaches, first seaside stop of the Cilento coast. Paestum and its temples are fifteen minutes away: sleeping here and walking the ruins at early morning is one of southern Campania's best-kept combinations.
