Laureana Cilento

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 1,151 · Postal code: 84050

The village was called Lauriano: the present name came with the unification of Italy, and «Cilento» was added to say where it was. Of the old village two twelfth-century buildings are left, the church of Santa Maria del Paradiso and the Casa del Mercato, the market house.

From 1811 to 1860 Laureana was in the circondario of Torchiara, in the district of Vallo; then, with the kingdom of Italy, in the mandamento of Torchiara, inside the circondario of Vallo della Lucania. The houses are almost all of Cilento stone, and the comune is scattered over seven hamlets: Archi, Casaliello, Matonti, San Martino, San Cono, Spinelli and Vetrali.
