Rutino

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 889 · Postal code: 84070

On the second Sunday of May, at Rutino, a man dressed as an angel comes down into the square hanging from a pulley that runs along a rope, and challenges Lucifer on the stage that serves as hell; when the procession returns he comes down again with shield and sword and strikes him down. The drama is taken from Milton's Paradise Lost, and the oldest document naming it, from 1866, lists the helmet, the breastplate and the lance of the actors.

The village stretches along a single axis, the old Tirrena road, and people call it «Rutino lungo e fino», Rutino long and thin. It appears for the first time as Ruticinum in a document of 954 telling of the journey of Saint Matthew's relics towards Salerno; from 1276 it belonged to the Sanseverino, and the feast used to fall on the eighth of May, the day of the archangel's apparition on the Gargano.
