During the war Campagna became a refuge: many Jews arrived here from the north thanks to bishop Giuseppe Maria Palatucci and his nephew Giovanni, and the townspeople hid them in the crypts of the churches. Giovanni Palatucci has been recognised as Righteous Among the Nations; what those people left behind is shown today in the Museo della Memoria.
The town lies at two hundred and seventy metres, in a valley of the Picentini mountains, and was once called Civitas Campaniae. The earliest records are Lombard, from the ninth century; then came the two castles, Gerione and De Alegisio, the noble palaces and the fifteenth-century fountains. It was a bishop's seat until 1973, when the diocese passed to Salerno. There are 15,953 residents.

Campagna celebrates Saint Antoninus the Abbot on 14 February; the Museum of Ethno-Anthropology and Contemporary Art holds the memory of Giordano Bruno, everyday objects and craft tools of rural life, and a collection of contemporary artworks.
A large, round artichoke head, the Romanesco type: Carciofo di Paestum, grown in the Sele plain since the 1920s, has held IGP status since 2004.
