Olevano sul Tusciano

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 6,883 · Postal code: 84062

There is no village called Olevano in Olevano: the municipality is a scattered one, the town hall stands in the hamlet of Ariano, and Olibanum was originally only the name of the castle on the hill, while the settlements around it — Ariano, Salitto, Monticelli, Castagneto, Valle — each had one of their own. The name comes from the olive trees, in Greek; the valley owes its own to the Etruscans, along with the river Tusciano.

The second name arrived by order. In July 1862 the prefecture passed on to the town council a circular of the Ministry of the Interior inviting municipalities with identical names — and there were other Olevano in the kingdom — to change them or to add something to tell them apart. The council, meeting on the sixth of November, chose the river: Olevano sul Tusciano ever since.
