On 17 May Furore, a municipality of 846 inhabitants in the province of Salerno, celebrates its patron Saint Paschal Baylon.
The name comes from noise: when the storm beats these rocks, says a nineteenth-century historian, the roar frightens. The fjord is not a fjord but a ría, that is, a valley cut by a stream and then flooded by the sea. In the hamlet at the bottom of the gorge Roberto Rossellini and Anna Magnani lived, and there they shot L'amore.
From the bridge that spans the fjord the world champions of high diving jump. Many districts bear the surname of those who lived there: Li Summonti, Le Porpore, Li Cuomi, Li Candidi. In 1532 the inhabitants were one hundred and forty, counted as twenty-eight hearths. Since 2019, by his own wish, Luciano De Crescenzo is buried in the cemetery of Furore.
