Saint Vincent Ferrer, patron of the land of Monte Palazzolo
📅 Every year, on 5 April
Fisciano celebrates Saint Vincent Ferrer on 5 April.
Fisciano is not one village but twenty-eight, scattered along the roads that follow the ancient Roman centuriation and gathered into a chief town and ten hamlets. The Romans reached the Irno valley around 88 before Christ, when Sulla, having won his war against Marius, handed out land to his veterans: the land was divided into centuries and entrusted to the families that moved in, and from that world a Roman villa resurfaced in 1981, in the locality of Macchione. The name appears for the first time in 977, in a deed by which certain lands of the church of San Massimo in Salerno pass to the priest Giovanni. Each village then made its name with a trade: at Fisciano the coppersmiths, at Lancusi the armourers, at Penta the tailors and the mascaturai, that is the men who made locks.
The Norman lord who took this territory ended up excommunicated. Turgisio had arrived in the train of Robert Guiscard and annexed Fisciano to the state of the Sanseverino, but he also laid hands on Church land north of Salerno; having given some of it back, he set his seat in the old Lombard gastaldate of Rota, and from there grew the Sanseverino dynasty, to which Fisciano stayed bound until 1553. That was the year of the fall: the prince of Salerno died at Avignon while on his way to ask the king of France for help. An autonomous comune since 1810, since 1988 Fisciano has housed the main campus of the University of Salerno.
