On the hill above Mercato San Severino sprawl the ruins of the Sanseverino castle, one of the largest fortified complexes in southern Italy: three rings of walls attesting the power of the family that took its name from here and for centuries ran half the Kingdom of Naples.
Below the stronghold, the "Mercato" in the town's name tells the other story — a trading crossroads of the Irno valley, now reinforced by the nearby university campus of Fisciano. The Salerno-province municipality counts 22,036 residents and remains the natural passage between Salerno and the Nocera plain.
