The white artichoke is Montoro's flag: naturally pale and tender enough to eat raw, it grows almost nowhere but this valley below the Picentini mountains and is feted each spring with a festival drawing food lovers from across Campania. Around it, the Irno valley stitches Avellino to Salerno with a string of industrious hamlets.
The municipality of 19,456 is among Italy's youngest by birth certificate: it has existed since 2013, when Montoro Inferiore and Montoro Superiore reunited what a Bourbon decree had split in 1820. The sixteenth-century collegiate churches of the two halves recall that history here has always run double.
