At Sava stands a first-century Roman villa that people here call the Catacombs: for centuries the local noble families used it as an ossuary, and the name has stuck. Those same families — Napoli, Barone, Farina — gave their names to the casali that make up the old centre, up the hill, below the church of the Santissimo Salvatore.

The comune, by contrast, is young: Joachim Murat proclaimed it on 26 January 1810, after Joseph Bonaparte had abolished feudalism — and the name comes from exactly that, from baronia. Legend dates the convent of the Santissima Trinità to 1212, scholarship to the fifteenth century. Today Baronissi, 16,790 residents, hosts the medical faculty of the University of Salerno.
