Giungano

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 1,249 · Postal code: 84050

Giungano was born of a flight: when the plain of Paestum turned to marsh and the Saracen raids began, the people climbed onto this rock. The village lies in an arc above the plain, and its oldest church, Sant'Agnello Abate, has a Benedictine cemetery beside it: they are of the twelfth century. In the centre the family palaces remain, from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth.

From the village starts the Bride's path, which is the old way between Paestum and the upper Cilento: it climbs among oaks and cork oaks up to Trentinara. The name comes from a story they still tell here: Isabella, of Giungano, and Saul, a brigand of Trentinara, could not be together, and threw themselves off the cliff.
