On 15 June Capaccio Paestum celebrates Saint Vitus, its patron, in the municipality of the Greek temples of Paestum.
Three of the Greek world's best-preserved Doric temples stand in a Cilento meadow: Paestum — the Poseidonia founded in the sixth century BC — has been UNESCO-listed since 1998, and its museum holds the Tomb of the Diver, the only surviving figured Greek funerary painting, its dive into the afterlife now an icon.
Walking at sunset between the basilica and the temple of Neptune, as the stone turns to honey, is an appointment with twenty-five centuries. Around, the plain's buffaloes give a pilgrimage-worthy mozzarella: archaeology and raw milk, the Cilento pairing.
