Feast of San Demetrio di Tessalonica
📅 Every year, on 26 October and on 26 August
On 26 October and on 26 August Morigerati, a municipality of 699 inhabitants in the province of Salerno, celebrates its patron San Demetrio di Tessalonica.
Morigerati sits on the hills of southern Cilento, some ten kilometres from the gulf of Policastro, and its natural fact is the resurgence of the Bussento: the river that comes back out of the caves, now a WWF oasis. The name is uncertain: perhaps from the Greek muriké, broom, perhaps from murgia, meaning a height; legend instead has it founded by the Morgetes, an Italic people, on the very spot where their fortified village stood. That the Romans came later is shown by the ruins at a place called Rumanuru.
In the old convent of Sant'Anna, in the centre, there is a museum worth the journey: more than a thousand objects of peasant life laid out in ten rooms — the cellar, the terracotta, the blacksmith, the cobbler, the woodcutter, the candle-maker, and a great machine for carding wool — gathered in the sixties and seventies by two local women, Clorinda and Modestina Florenzano, and made a museum in 1976. The other wealth is oil: the microclimate allows different cultivars in the main village and in the hamlet of Sicilì, all pressed in the comune's single mill, and the oldest association of oil tasters in Campania has its seat here. The village holds the Touring Club's Orange Flag.
