Tortorella

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 563 · Postal code: 84030

Tortorella lies in the southern Cilento, some ten kilometres from the sea but without sight of it: the village is on a hill, in the middle of a large wooded area belonging to the national park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano. It has a single hamlet, Caselle, and borders on Basilicata, since one of the comuni it shares a boundary with, Rivello, is already in the province of Potenza. Administratively it was long tied to Vibonati: from 1811 within its district, and then within its mandamento until the early twentieth century.

What put this village of a few hundred people in the national papers, however, is recent, and has to do with rubbish: in 2011 Legambiente awarded it the title of Comune Riciclone, first comune in southern Italy under ten thousand inhabitants for separate waste collection. A record which, in a region where waste management has been a problem for years, is worth more than it may seem.
