Ispani

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 1,020 · Postal code: 84050

A map of 1746 says that Capitello was a borgo, while Ispani and San Cristoforo had no right to call themselves a city, a comune or even a hamlet, and above all could not put up fortifications to defend themselves from the pirates. So the houses drew close around the church, with alleys so narrow that they became a defence by themselves.

On the twenty-sixth of November 1557 the corsair Dragut, after Policastro, burnt Ispani too: of the inhabitants, about a hundred, some twenty survived. The censuses of the Kingdom tell the rest: forty inhabitants in 1595, seventy in 1614, fifty in 1660, and six hundred and seventy-one in 1790.
