For centuries, the ancient core of Nuceria Alfaterna was a single settlement that included modern-day Pagani and several smaller centers. It was only in 1851 that this historic community officially split, severing Nocera Superiore from its immediate neighbor, Nocera Inferiore.
Currently home to 24,151 residents in the province of Salerno, the town retains deep ties to its Campania origins. Although administratively independent today, its complex past is written into the shifting names it held through the ages, from Nuceria Constantia to Nuceria Christianorum.
