Battipaglia

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 50,464 · Postal code: 84091

Battipaglia is young by Italian standards — an independent municipality only since 1929, grown from a Bourbon farming colony — but its plain is ancient: the Sele valley, where the buffaloes graze that give one of Campania's most celebrated mozzarellas. The dairies welcome visitors, and a still-warm bocconcino is an experience of its own.

The small medieval castle looks down on a hardworking town, the farming and industrial hub of the Salerno plain. Position is strategic: Paestum's temples fifteen minutes away, the Amalfi Coast and Cilento thirty.
