Feast of Saint Christopher
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July Ricigliano, a municipality of 1,207 inhabitants in the province of Salerno, celebrates its patron Saint Christopher (San Cristoforo).
The name does not come, as tradition would have it, from a recinctum Iani, an enclosure sacred to Janus: no trace of that cult has ever been found here, and the Latin word means something else. More probably it comes from Ricilius, the Roman family that held an estate in the territory of Volcei, today Buccino.
On the twenty-fourth of November 1861 Carmine Crocco and the Spaniard José Borjès arrived, welcomed «with music and the priests as a reception committee»; then the village was sacked so savagely that Borjès did not feel able to write the details in his diary. The earthquake of 1980 carried off almost all the rest, but the Turniata of San Vito has been held for more than a thousand years at the chapel outside the village.
