On the night of 2-3 March 1944, in a tunnel not far from the station, train 8017 came to a stop and more than five hundred people travelling on it died of suffocation. It is one of the worst rail disasters that has ever happened.
On 23 November 1980 the Irpinia earthquake hit Balvano squarely: the collapse of the church alone killed 77 people, and little of the town was left. John Paul II came here right after the shock. In the industrial zone that grew up after the earthquake a brewery and a confectionery plant work today. There are 1,861 residents.
