San Cipriano Picentino

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 6,643 · Postal code: 84099

Jacopo Sannazaro lived here for some twenty years, and wrote of the place: among the mountains there is a most beautiful valley, above which the Cerreta crag rises to the sky. The village stands on the slopes of Monte Monna, among hazel and chestnut woods, and from up there you can see Salerno, its harbour and, from certain points, both coasts.

In 1531 San Cipriano managed to break away from the Principality and set itself up as a free Università, with a government elected by the people of its villages; two years later it also built the palace of the barony. The addition Picentino, on the other hand, came from above, by a royal decree of 1862. In 1929 Giffoni Sei Casali was annexed to the municipality, and recovered its autonomy in 1944.
