San Mango Piemonte

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 2,587 · Postal code: 84090

The name seems to say Piedmont, and it does not: San Mango Piemonte is the worn-down form of Terra Sancti Magni Pedemontis, the land of Saint Magnus at the foot of the mountain, that Tubenna which rises above the village. Until 1862 the comune was called simply San Mango, and it was a royal decree that added the rest. The saint is Magnus, bishop of Trani, martyred in 251, who by tradition took refuge here in a cave, on the mountain that now bears his name.

That cave became a hermitage: the story goes that the saint, after his death, appeared to the faithful and pointed to it as the place where he wanted one built, and on the rock wall there is a fresco of him dated 1541. On the nineteenth of August a procession climbs all the way up, where many are waiting after a vigil that has lasted the whole night. The village, some sources say, was born in 88 BC out of the flight of the people of Picentia, destroyed by the Romans; in the twelfth century it had its own Universitas, and later a barony of its own.

📅 Every year, on 19 August, with an overnight vigil and procession to the hermitage

San Mango Piemonte celebrates Saint Magnus the Martyr on 19 August: a procession carries the saint's statue up to the hermitage on the hill of the same name, after an all-night vigil.
