Siding with Hannibal proved to be a fatal miscalculation for the ancient city of Picentia. During the Second Punic War, the settlement that once occupied the modern footprint of Pontecagnano Faiano rebelled against the Roman Republic, resulting in its total destruction and eventual abandonment. The Iron Age ruins now serve as the defining historical anchor of the area.
Located in the province of Salerno, the municipality only gained its administrative independence in 1911 by separating from neighboring Montecorvino Pugliano. Today, the town is home to around 25,000 residents, functioning as a modern residential hub built directly over centuries of buried history.
