Sapri

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 6,809 · Postal code: 84073

Cicero called this bay parva gemma maris inferi, small gem of the lower sea, which for the Romans was the Tyrrhenian. Of the maritime villa with baths, theatre and mosaics that stood in the Cammarelle district almost nothing remains: at the beginning of the twentieth century a lime kiln was working nearby, and the suspicion is that the stones of the villa ended up inside it, turned into lime, and then into the walls of the houses of Sapri.

The name of Sapri travels for another reason, though. On the night between the twenty-eighth and the twenty-ninth of June 1857 Carlo Pisacane landed here with his three hundred; the expedition failed and ended in blood, but Luigi Mercantini turned it into the Gleaner of Sapri, and all of Italy still knows those lines. The square is called largo dei Trecento, of the three hundred, and on the Scialandro rock, since 1994, a bronze gleaner looks towards the bay.
