Torraca

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 1,267 · Postal code: 84030

Around Torraca there was a Greek world. At the place called San Fantino the walls and the apse remain of a little church dedicated to a Basilian monk; a little further down, over the bay of Sapri, stand the ruins of a Greek monastery, and at the nearby abbey of San Giovanni a Piro the abbot was Theodore Gaza, the humanist from Thessalonica. The gulf of Policastro is the farthest tip of the Mercurion, the cradle of Greek monasticism in Italy.

In 2007 the comune changed all seven hundred of its street lamps, replacing the bulbs with LEDs: it was the first place in the world to do it completely, spent two hundred and eighty thousand euro and cut energy and maintenance costs by seventy per cent. It won the Kyoto prize of that year, and the papers began to call it «the LED city».
