Vietri sul Mare

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 8,076 · Postal code: 84019

Vietri is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, and it is its ceramics: bell towers clad in majolica, painted confraternity façades, altars covered in tiles. After the war the architect Paolo Soleri built the Solimene factory here, a building of ceramic and concrete that became an example of organic architecture.

Before the tiles there were the pirates: from the tower of Marina di Vietri the sentries exchanged signals of fire and smoke with the towers of Cetara, Maiori and Salerno, each tower within sight of the next. The steep lanes climbing to Raito and Albori are the paths by which people fled uphill. In 1944, when Salerno was for a few months the capital of Italy, the king stayed at Villa Guariglia, in Raito.

Saint John the Baptist, patron of the land of ceramics

📅 Every year, on 24 June, with Saint John and Saint Anthony carried in procession together

Vietri sul Mare celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the church dedicated to him. Because of the strong devotion to Saint Anthony of Padua as well, the statues of both saints are carried in procession on the same day.
