The Gothic Line ran through here, and it still shows. The village was devastated by Allied bombing in November 1944 and liberated on 5 March 1945 by the American tenth Mountain Division; the next day the same soldiers took Monte della Spe, which the Allies called Objective Queen and which the Germans counter-attacked several times before it became the bridgehead for the spring offensive. That story is now told by the Museum of stories from the Gothic Line, the permanent exhibition at Rocca di Roffeno and a model in the civic hall.
From before the war the towers remain: at Rocca di Roffeno the tower houses of the Poggiolo, of the Civetta and the Monzone, at Serra Sarzana the Torre Jussi, at Casigno the Palazzo, and then the towers of Lavacchio and Lamari. In the castle of Rocca di Roffeno the painter Giorgio Morandi lived, and beside it stands the abbey of Santa Lucia. In the Aneva valley, at San Cristoforo di Labante, open the Labante caves, among the most impressive travertine caves in Italy.
