Saint Lawrence, patron of Montese
📅 Every year, on 10 August
Montese celebrates Saint Lawrence on 10 August, in the church dedicated to him.
On the fourteenth of April 1945 the soldiers of the Força Expedicionária Brasileira took Montese: it was the most important military victory the Brazilian army won overseas. The north-western edge of the Gothic Line ran through here, and in the woods you can still see the trenches, the observation posts and the shelters dug by the Brazilians, by the American Tenth Mountain Division and by the Germans.
On the arms an eagle is perched on a mountain. It comes from the Montecuccoli, lords of the Frignano: their blazon was six mounts, and Charles IV allowed them to add the eagle of the Empire after being their guest at the fortress of Montefiorino on his way to Rome. Between 1899 and 1920 the physicist Augusto Righi spent his summers here, and brought Carducci and Respighi with him.
