Fanano

Province: Modena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,028 · Postal code: 41021

A monastery is said to have been founded here, at the beginning of the seventh century, by saint Columbanus, and in the middle of the village a church is still dedicated to the Irish saint. The local families, however, split into two factions and killed one another for generations: in 1532 the duke of Ferrara, tired of the disorder, had the castle pulled down.

People lived on chestnuts here: dried and ground in the mills along the Leo and the Fellicarolo, they were the everyday food. From Trignano came the pioneer Felice Pedroni, who in America signed himself Felix Pedro, and Fanano is twinned with Fairbanks, in Alaska. The fountain in piazza Corsini is of 1913, and the springs that fill it were the gift of a local doctor, Camillo Monari.
