The patron saint of Argenta is Saint Nicholas, celebrated on 6 December in the church dedicated to him, in the hamlet of San Nicolò.
Tradition links the town's founding to Bishop Exuperantius of Ravenna, between 425 and 430, on the right bank of the Po, near the parish church of San Giorgio, the oldest place of worship in the area. According to local historian Camillo Laderchi, in the following century the territory was granted by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, victorious over the Ostrogoths in 540, to the bishop of Ravenna, Agnello, thus becoming part of the Archdiocese of Ravenna as the Vicariate of Argenta. The town also holds the church of San Zeno, in the hamlet of Consandolo, and the former church of San Domenico.
