Saint Anthony of Padua, patron of Voghiera
📅 Every year, on 13 June
Voghiera celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June.
On the coat of arms of Voghiera there is the gate of a castle: it is the gate of Belriguardo, the delizia the Este built for themselves out here in the countryside, which now houses the town museum. In the hamlet of Voghenza, which the Romans called Vicohabentia, there is a necropolis and there was a bishop's seat: the bishop was here before Ferrara existed.
The other thing the place is known for is garlic, which got its protected designation in 2010 and of which Voghiera grows about sixty per cent. The label changed the trade: selling in the field stopped and companies grew up to process and pack. From the garlic come patés, flavoured oil, black fermented garlic and even ice cream.
